– Hi everyone. I am Ian Harvey, massage therapist, and I’d like to introduce you
to my friend, Maria Natera. She is a massage therapist of 30 years and massage instructor of 25 years. So she really knows what she’s doing and she has a new channel here on YouTube called Massage Therapeutics. And it’s awesome. It’s really well done. The production levels
are through the roof. It makes me look bad, but
I do want you to meet her and I would love it if you
would check out her channel. So I asked her if she
would make us a video about her favorite massage techniques and she agreed to it. So check it out and check out her channel by going to the link
down in the description. So take it away, Maria. – Thanks Ian for asking me
to collaborate with you. Hi Sloths. I hope my favorite massage techniques help you elevate your massage practice. So let’s jump right in. So we drew the muscles
here for you to show you. We’ve got the brachioradialis,
the pronator teres, the flexor carpi radialis,
which originates here. They all originate here at the humerus and it inserts on the radial side. The palmaris longus which
looks like a tall palm tree. And then the flexor carpi ulnaris which inserts on the ulnar side. Then I also like to do some skin rolling, cross fiber right here. This really warms up the muscles. The extensors too along with the flexors. And you can actually
grasp the brachioradialis. Especially for massage therapists, we have a lot of trigger
points right here. So you might want to really
grasp the brachioradialis here. And I’m going to show you here, one of my favorite techniques
is I have a lot of clients coming in with carpal tunnel syndrome so stripping the muscles is
one of my favorite techniques. So all I’m doing is having
her flex back and forth, and I am putting a little bit of pressure. And you ask your client to flex and extend as far as possible and you’re moving down very
slowly and very gently. You don’t want to squeeze so tight that they can’t even move it so you let up a little
bit on the pressure. But as you can see, as she extends, it’s really pulling all the nine tendons that go through the carpal tunnel. The palmaris longus is the only one that doesn’t go through the carpal tunnel. So she’s moving flexing extending and I do this up to three times. This is great for people
with carpal tunnel syndrome. You just go down real slowly. Now when you get to the origins, you stop. A lot of triggers are
in the pronator teres so you want to work from
origin to insertion. And also right here the brachioradialis, you can really grasp it when
you’re in this position. You can really work it out. Now another stripping that you can do, she’s going to move sideways. So, tuck the thumb in. There you go. And move back and forth. Laterally and medially almost
adduction and abduction. And this also works all
the flexors and extensors. And this is actually one of the tests for carpal tunnel syndrome. When they tuck in their thumb, and then move the hand down. And you also do this one
up to two to three times. I do it three times if they’re
having a lot of problems. And then you stop and obviously you’re
going to your effleurage and you want to get right
here in the carpal tunnel. And if you can ask your clients if you want to see the palmaris, you just, you know, flex your hand and you can see the palmaris
longus tendon right there. It’s the one that pops up because that doesn’t go
through the carpal tunnel. So this is actually my favorite technique, the stripping of the muscles and I hope that this really helps you. And remember, you do
it two to three times. You can do it without her moving her arm, or you can do it with
her flexing and extending back and forth two to three times. And then also, abduction and adduction with the thumb tucked in. So another one of my favorite techniques is doing some occipital work. And all I’m doing is grabbing the occiput and just doing circular motions
out from the medial part. Just really rubbing slowly. Remember, we’ve got the suboccipitals. We’ve got the splenius
capitus, splenius cervicis, upper trapezius, occipital frontalis… They all attach and insert
right here so it’s really good if you could just really just work it out. One of my very favorite techniques
is you raise their head, and we’re going to glide
the laminar groove. So her head is raised up and you want the weight of her head. So you want your client to relax. Tell them to relax. You cup the neck like this, and you’re going to use
your thumb around the neck. And you put your thumb
right on the laminar groove. And as you can see, the weight of her head
is letting me glide down. Gliding down the laminar
groove from C1 to C7, and the weight of her head
is what’s guiding my hand. And if you don’t want to use your thumbs because your thumbs hurt, then you can use your middle finger. That also feels really good. Actually that’s one of my very favorites. One of my very favorite techniques. So I want to show you another
one of my favorite strokes on the back and it’s not this one. It’s actually going around the scapula. I use my forearm and you’re
at the head of your client, and then you just go around. You’re going to arch your stance and you’re pushing with your feet. And I’m going all the
way around the scapula, all the way up to the acromion process. And this one feels really good on clients. They enjoy it. And all I’m doing is
going around the scapula. So right here is another one my favorites, right at the lower back. A lot of people have low back pain so I like to go again with my forearm. And I just glide back and
forth, back and forth. And I know for me I really like it. I go down to the sacrum area. You get all the attachments of the QL, the quadratus lumborum
and the latissimus dorsi. So this one’s a really good one. And all I’m doing is just
like sawing back and forth. Also while you’re on this side, you can go around the ilium. Get all of the origins of
the lat right here and the QL From the opposite side of the table, you’re just pulling. You can do the intercostals. I like going up the
laminar groove in circles, like little circles here going all the way up. You get the spinalis which is
one of the erector spinaes. So thank you sloths for tuning in and don’t forget to check
out my YouTube channel at Massage Therapeutics. Until the next time, create a good day. – Alright so that was awesome. Maria, thanks so much. And everyone please go check
out her YouTube channel down in the comments. If she got ten thousand
new subscribers from this I would be pleased as punch. As always, let me know what
you think down in the comments. Let me know if there’s anyone else that I should feature on this channel. Let me know what you’d like to see next and I will see you next time.
Thanks Ian for introducing Maria , a gift to be sure. 🙏🏻
Awesome. What a lovely video
Hi Ian, long time no see!
She only has 600 subscribers?
I really liked the muscles drawn on for extra visuals!
I have subscribed!
Thank you..
Very much appreciated🌻
Wow! She seems very knowledgeable! Her explanations are great! Also, and this is on a different topic, I'm not a massage therapist but are there massages that someone can do to themselves for TMJ and knee pain?
Please feature Allison from Rebel Massage! She is an amazing therapist.
Thank you Maria, your a natural!
Grabbing thumb and adducting is finklestein’s test, which is not for carpal tunnel, but for de quervain’s tenosynovitis (inflammation of thumb/anatomical snuffbox tendons)
Thank you, love…I dig her! Subscribed!
Thanks for featuring Maria. Very professional & I love the way she demonstrated her techniques. I'm definitely checking out her channel.
Why havent you done the vids that you said you would? I do like the drawn on muscles but certain voices hold my attention
Fantastic Video of Maria, great to see her techniques, inspiring and helpful. Thank you both.
I got to around :50 with the drawn on muscles (brilliant) … clicked on her channel link… and smashed/subscribed. (Her subs are in the 800's now… ) Thank you!
Wow! That haircut is a change. I like it, but you look older and mature! The other haircut looked more youthful and spirited. But both are nice! :3
You look good Ian 🙂
I've subscribed, can't wait to watch her videos. I'm not a therapist but I get a massage every fortnight because I have a lot of things wrong with my spine and my hips and legs are probably the most painful when getting massaged. Sometimes there's no pain, she can get in there with deep tissue and other times I'm jumping off the table and she's put very little pressure on my body. Hands down the quads are the worst!! But it's a necessity that helps my pain to a degree, therefore, helps me to be as mobile as possible xx
I saw her videos before. She is awesome. Thanks for highlighting her on your channel.
Yesssss Ian!! You are an inspiration of how to show support! She is awesome. You are awesome. And I feel blessed to be in this community! Guys – this is how you make the world a better place. My hat is off to you both!
Fun Fact: the Palmaris Longus is absent in an estimated 14% of the human population( myself included).
Great job, Maria…definitely checking out your Chan! Love the collab feature with other Therapists, Ian!
Only thing I wish is that to dislike a vid, you had to leave a reason why, lol. I’m always curious why people dislike a video!
Yep 👍 subbing to her now!
Drawing the muscles is genius! I love being able to see more directly how the technics work. All massage channels should take note! Great idea and great work, Maria!

Maria is awesome with her massages. Last week she gave me a 30 min. massage and I was so relaxed and that night I slept like a baby. She will help me with my sciatica. Can’t wait for second treatment next week. Good bye painful Epidural Shots. 💉💉💉
I have so much respect for Ms. Natera! She was my teacher back in 2017! Now that Im licensed I find that I'll never stop learning! There's so much to know! She's AMAZING and I love when therapists support each other! Much love and good vibes to you both 😃♥️! Subscribed!

I love Maria’s techniques. I’m sure going to be a follower and recommend her knowledge!!! Thank you Maria!!
not a fan of the back round music…..
Maria's videos are great! I'm a visual learner and I can visualize the muscles better. I was also able to understand what muscles are most likely causing my back pain. I watch Ian's videos when my back hurts. I feel better. He should do ASMR videos. I think both Ian's and Maria's videos help me learn and understand better. Thank you Ian for sharing Maria with us!
